Found across much of central Africa, these Old World flycatchers live in woodlands, often near rivers. Feeding on arthropods, including beetles, grasshoppers, ants, small millipedes, and spiders, they forage mostly on the ground or from perches in pairs or family groups and join mixed-species flocks. They build shallow cup-shaped nests from twigs, dry grass, stems, bark, rootlets, and fibers and sometimes use the old nests of other birds. Females incubate clutches of two to three eggs and both parents feed the chicks.
